Tongkat Ali is from the Malay language that translates to Ali’s crutch/stick. Also known as the Malaysian Ginseng, Tongkat Ali root comes from a plant known as Eurycoma Longifolia. This herbal medicinal plant is found mainly in the deep rainforests of South-East Asian countries.
This herbal root carries various commercial names in multiple languages. Tongkat Ali is also known as ‘Pasak Bumi’ in Indonesia, Cay Ba Binh in Vietnam, Pin Yin: 东革阿里 or Dōng gé ālǐ in China, ‘Longjack’ in the United States or Europe and ‘Malaysian Ginseng’ or `Akar Ali’ by some locals.
Can Tongkat Ali Replace Viagra?
There is no denying that Tongkat Ali started off uncannily as a natural aphrodisiac, used by men centuries ago. In the Asian culture where metaphors are frequently used in local conversations and folklores, the word “Tongkat” can often be misinterpreted as a hard erection.
But NO, to the disappointment of many, Tongkat Ali is NOT a replacement for Viagra.
Viagra(sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil) belong to a class of drugs known as PDE5-inhibitors, or commonly referred to as PDE5. According to MedicalNewsToday.com, “PDE5 is an enzyme in the walls of blood vessels. It affects blood flow and how cells signal within the body.”
Have you wondered the mechanism behind that sudden rush (or lust) right after consuming Viagra or Cialis? It is because more blood is flowing into your penis.
In short, such erection drug give you a hard on within a very short time (some where between 15 mins to 2 hours) after taking the pill. Tongkat Ali does not work this way. It doesn’t give you an instant hard on.
What Does Tongkat Ali Do Then?
Tongkat Ali work by activating testosterone hormones in your body. Tongkat Ali is now gaining global popularity amongst those seeking for natural alternative remedies due to its wide range of proven health benefits.
1. Tongkat Ali Is A Natural Lidibo Booster
What is lidibo? Libido means sexual desire. Tongkat Ali boosts libido in men by increasing testosterone levels in your body. Experts found that low testosterone is closely correlated with low sexual libido. Our level of testosterone drops significantly by 50% by the age of 30+ years.
Tongkat Ali is effective in boosting your libido provided you are seeking long-term sustainable effect rather than a quick instant reaction to complete your duty for the night. As with all-natural products, the long-term benefits of Tongkat Ali are activated by regulating and increase your testosterone.
In a 12-week study, Tongkat Ali extract was examined for its effect on sexual performance, fulfillment, and well-being in samples. Compared with the placebo group, results showed increased in libido scores were including increased hardness and erection time
Most scientific studies are based on 200 to 400 mg of Tongkat Ali dosage between four to 12 weeks to gain maximum benefits on men’s libido, sperm concentration and motility.
2. Tongkat Ali Improves Erection (But Not Instantly)
Tongkat Ali is one of the herbs that is often touted as the next herbal viagra. But wait, we just mentioned that it DOES NOT replace viagra right?
To debunk the myth, yes Tongkat Ali improves your erection in two areas:
- by making your penis harder, AND
- by enabling you to have a longer erection time.
This was validated from a scientific study published in 2014, with 30 healthy adults between 40-65 years, subjected to daily consumption of Tongkat Ali over a period of 12 weeks.
In short it does work, but like all natural health supplements, it does not work instantly.
3. Tongkat Ali Improves Sperm Motility
Research studies showed that consuming Tongkat Ali can improve sperm concentration and motility significantly.
According to research published in 2010, a total of 350 patients were given 200 mg of the extract daily and follow-up semen analyses were performed every 3 months for 9 months.
Of these 350 patients, 75 patients completed one full cycle of 3 months. Follow-up semen analyses in these patients showed significant improvement.
4. Tongkat Ali Improves Strength, Muscle & Physical Activities
The versatility of Tongkat Ali enables wider application as a functional ingredient that is widely popular amongst fitness and sports community. The benefit of adding Tongkat Ali gives a performance edge in strength and muscle growth. Tongkat Ali is a popular performance ingredient that is mixed with other herbs such as Ashwagandha and Maca.
Tongkat Ali is widely used as a pre-workout drink by athletes and sports professionals in recent years as a safe replacement compared to steroids. The health benefits of Tongkat Ali amongst sports and fitness communities enable a remarkable increase in performance-related activities – notably in muscle growth and strength.
In another 5 week study, where 13 men and 12 women were given 400 mg each of Tongkat Ali daily revealed an increase of 16.6% of the muscular force hand-grip test in men and 13.7% in women. This study also confirms Tongkat Ali’s ergogenic benefit through improved muscle strength .
Tongkat Ali also has a great impact on the improved muscle strength of middle-aged women too. This effect was found in a study conducted by the University of MARA Technology Malaysia on 31 women between 45 to 59 years. It was revealed that in a duration of 12 weeks, 200mg of Tongkat Ali daily resulted in 67% improvement on the bench press, 21% improvement on upper body power and significant improvement in handgrip strength.
5. TongKat Ali Has No Bad Side Effects (Unlike Viagra)
Almost 99% of consumers who have consumed Tongkat Ali posted a positive experience without experiencing any form of side effects.
However, there may be some mild side-effects associated with Tongkat Ali consumption. For some, this includes insomnia, mild jittery and mild nausea. These side-effects depend largely on a person’s reaction or allergy towards alkaloids and quassinoids.
There have been no severe cases related to Tongkat Ali or reported deaths in publicly available information.
On the other hand, the most documented side effects of Viagra and Cialis (including substance containing PDE5-inhibitors) from official sources are:
- An erection that will not go away (priapism)
- Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes
- Sudden hearing decrease or hearing loss
- Mild or severe headache
- Mild or severe diarrhea
- Nasal Congestion
- Muscle pain
One of the side-effects that people fear most is infertility that can be caused by Viagra or any substance containing sildenafil.
But how far is the truth? There is evidence from a research study by the Queen’s University in Belfast United Kingdom that suggests the use of sildenafil citrate may adversely affect male fertility. Whilst Pfizer issued a statement strongly denying this, we will leave this to you to ponder about it.
