What does vitamin C do?

Vitamin C is one of the most popularly known micronutrients. One of the primary functions of vitamin C is to boost your immunity against immunodeficiencies. Vitamin C is absorbed by our bodies through the consumption of vitamin C-rich foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Our bodies cannot produce, or store large amounts of vitamin C. As such, it can be good for us to get an extra dose of the vitamin by taking a health supplement.

Vitamin C helps to normalise our body’s immune function. As an antioxidant, vitamin C also contributes to the protection of our cells and helps them to function normally. Vitamin C also contributes to normal collagen formation. Collagen is a protein which provides structure to different parts of your body, including your bones, teeth, gums and skin. Vitamin C plays a small part in keeping them healthy.

Natural Vitamin C vs Synthetic Vitamin C

Natural Vitamin C is usually extracted from whole food such as acerola berries, camu-camu and Amla. Natural Vitamin C is a complex of several naturally occurring elements synergistically present and bonded to provide the complete beneficial effects of vitamin C.

Complete vitamin C is composed of many co-factors such as bioflavonoids, rutin, Factor J, Factor K, Factor P, Tyrosinase, Ascorbinogen, Ascorbic acid and other components. Each of these is vital to the complete biological activity that enables vitamin C to function fully.

Some Vitamin C supplements are chemically manufactured from corn sugar – these are considered as synthetic Vitamin C. Corn not known to be high in naturally occuring Vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is synthetically manufactured using corn sugar as raw material.

Ascorbic acid is only a very small fraction of vitamin C complex. Most synthetic forms of vitamin C do little good but tax your liver and kidneys before being eliminated through your urine. Taking synthetic ascorbic acid can make the body more acidic over time and steals from the body’s calcium reserve since the body must release calcium to neutralize the acidity of synthetic ascorbic acid.

What is Vitamin D and why do I need it?

Vitamin D is primarily formed in our skin through the action of UV sunlight on the skin and plays an important role in immune support. Every individual will need different levels of exposure, as each of us tend to produce vitamin D at varying speeds. This depends on how much of the skin is exposed, the time of day that skin exposure occurs, and the duration of exposure.

However, getting a daily dose of sunlight exposure is not always possible. Fortunately, you can also supplement your body with an adequate intake of vitamin D through the consumption of certain foods and the taking of supplements.

What is Zinc and why do I need it?

Zinc is a mineral that, like vitamin C, can help to boost your immunity, and protects the cells in your body from oxidative stress. Zinc is also required for healthy growth and development. Although essential to our immunity, our bodies are incapable of producing zinc. Instead, zinc can be found in different foods – meat, fish, milk, dairy and cereals.

Zinc-Enriched Probiotics For Greater Synergistic Effect

Probiotics are live microorganisms that have roles including supporting nutrient absorption and general gut health. While zinc and probiotics each offer support for your immune system and healthy digestion, when combined they are even more powerful.

Zinc-enriched Bifidobacterium longum CCFM1195 has over 96% of the Zinc organically bound to the probiotic and contains standardized levels of zinc.

Zinc-enriched probiotics display high bioavailability when compared to other common zinc sources. Organic Zinc could be easily absorbed by the body.

The combination of zinc with probiotics delivers synergistic benefits:

  • Support for healthy immune defenses and immune system activation.
  • Support for normal microflora in the gut, and for generally healthy gut function and gastrointestinal lining integrity.
  • Support for healthy respiratory mucosal immune responses.
  • Promotion of normal digestion, including a reduction in issues like occasional constipation and gas.

Why do we need the combination Of Vitamin C, D & Zinc?

Vitamin C, D and Zinc are key nutrients in maintaining the integrity and function of the immune system, presenting synergistic actions in strengthening our immune system.

While zinc helps to develop and activate a type of white blood cell – T-lymphocyte – that protects the body from infection, vitamin D supports the production of germ-fighting proteins by key immune cells. As for vitamin C, not only does the body rely on it to put up a good fight whenever it detects a bug or a virus, but it can even shorten the length and severity of a cold.

A recent study has shown that vitamins C, D and Zinc stand out for having immunomodulatory functions and for playing roles in preserving physical tissue barriers such as the skin and mucous membranes. The synergistic action of these nutrients in the maintenance of physical tissue barriers form a protection layer against viral infection.

In addition, evidence has also shown that deficiency of one or more of those three elements compromises the immune response, making an individual more vulnerable to viral infections and may result in more severe symptoms and complications. A recent study has shown that deficiency in the 3 key nutrients during a viral infection results in the increase in disease severity, elevated inflammation markers and prolonged hospital stay.
